She had a strong sense of place from her mother and also believed that newspapers created a sense of place. She suspected that local newspapers in chains and conglomerates were producing less and less local news, focusing more on national and it caused people to detach from them.  Her hypothesis was correct relating to the Toronto Star, and showed a trend in local news decreasing but world news increasing. Local news are the backbone of the news industry. Without local newspapers reporting we aren't able of what is going on. In the past decade, thousands of newspapers have shut down. However, the Pew Research center(2021) found that while physical circulation is down, online readership has risen sharply.
