In the past, magazines and the advertisements within them used to have a huge influence on peoples identities and cultures. Stuff like making sure your jeans are tight and wearing matching colors.

Social media impacts us in a similar way today, in an arguably more intense way, our presences on social media can influence others thoughts and feelings toward us.  It can make people feel like they have to be a certain way, and they can make them feel bad, comparing yourself to so many other people is bad for your mental health.

Another aspect of social medium is anonymity, so many people will act differently, most of the time more rudely, because they know nothing they say can come back to them and don't care about who they're bothering. These people are commonly called trolls.

Our privacy is something else that social media has peered into. Social media companies have free reign over our data and can choose to use it in any way they choose, whether its selling it to advertisers or creating ads themselves.
