Media covering events is essential to the messages conveyed through the events. Since I am a sports guy, I like to look at sports as the perfect example of media covering events and the influential role they play. Although the media may not directly impact the outcome of a sporting event, the media is the most important tool to spread the information during and after the game. Without media coverage, the interested audience outside of the stadium itself would have no clue what actually happened inside the arena, aside from the technical hearsay that they get from people that were there.

For example, the NBA record for points in a game was set by Wilt Chamberlain in a game where he scored 100 points. There was no video evidence of the game, or media coverage until after the game, so critics commonly question the actual occurrence of the event. Clearly, the game result is not altered without media coverage, but the individual 100 point performance can be put into question without the coverage of the media. The peculiar thing about this specific game is that there was video evidence of other performances around the same time, but none of that particular game.

Without the media, these incidents can be put into question. The nature of the media covering events gives them credibility, along with spreading the popularity of the sport itself. Due to the increased popularity of sports through the media over the course of the past 50 years, we now have 24 hour coverage of sports media on ESPN and other sources on television and the internet.
