Worker Activist Group Plans March in Columbus
This Sunday, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, otherwise known as the C-I-W, has planned a march
in Columbus to promote fair wages and better working conditions for the farmers that grow tomatoes for
restaurants including Taco Bell, Chipotle, McDonald's and Wendy's. The march is being held in Columbus, where
Wendy's headquarters is located, because the C-I-W feels that Wendy's is unwilling to stand with their workers
on issues pertaining to workplace equality. The C-I-W is an activist group that pledges for women farm workers
to fight against sexual harassment and violence in the fields, and has stirred up commotion in the past. In 2005, they
lead a successful boycott against Taco Bell for similar concerns, resulting in a Fair Food agreement that was signed by
the majority of companies that the C-I-W farmers grow for. Wendy's didn't sign the agreement after several years of
progress, and is the only company in the group to not use the C-I-W grown tomatoes. Their latest march is just the
most recent in a string of action by the organization.
